Erwin Maas is a New York based theater director, teacher and performing arts advocate from the Netherlands. He has worked extensively in Australia, Europe, and USA. In New York, he has directed numerous Off-Off & Off-Broadway productions…as well as various site-specific works. He collaborated with the Sundance Theatre Institute, American Opera Projects, Hybrid Theatre Works, Pocket Opera of New York, Nico Muhly, Mimi Lien, Oana Botez, Jian Jung, Jeanette Yew, Lucrecia Briceno, Judith Adong, Sam Forman and Saviana Stanescu, among many others. He was a guest speaker, lecturer, instructor and director at academies and universities including Yale School of Drama, NYU Drama Department, Columbia University / Barnard College, Carnegie Mellon University, Brown University / Trinity Rep, and at academies in Berlin, Barcelona, Sydney, and Amsterdam. From 2010 to 2014, Maas shared the position of Director of Performing Arts for the Cultural Department of the Royal Netherlands Embassy & Consulates in the USA. He is a member of the Netherland-America Foundation Cultural Committee and he is on the Artistic Advisory Board of the ISSUE Project Room in Brooklyn. Erwin holds a M.A. in Drama Teaching and Directing from the Academy for Dramatic Arts Eindhoven in the Netherlands, a M.A. in Media Arts and Production/Documentary Filmmaking from the University of Technology Sydney – Australia, and a MFA in Theatre Directing from Columbia University School of the Arts in NYC.
