PIMA COURSES

Students must complete 46 credits of approved graduate level work including PIMA courses and electives offered in the departments of Art, Conservatory of Music, Film, Television and Radio, Theater, and or graduate courses offered within the CUNY colleges by permission of the PIMA Director and CUNY instructor. 

Students must maintain a minimum of a B average to earn the PIMA MFA degree.  Coursework includes:

  • Twelve required PIMA M.F.A. courses:

    • PIMA 7010G: Sound, Image, Space, and Performance:
 Interactive Media Programming I,
 30 hours lecture, 45 hours laboratory, 3 credits
 (taken in the first semester).

    • PIMA 7020G: Artistic Process and Contemporary Community: 
Interactive Media Programming II,
 30 hours lecture, 45 hours laboratory, 3 credits 
(taken in the second semester).

    • PIMA 7030G: Collaborative Interactive Media Performance, 
45 hours lecture, 3 credits
 (taken in the third semester)

    • PIMA 7210G: History, Theory, and Criticism, 
45 hours lecture, 3 credits 
(taken in the first semester)

    • PIMA 7220G: Teaching Practicum, 
30 hours lecture, 45 hours practical teaching, 3 credits
 (taken in the second or fourth semester)

    • PIMA 7230G: Thesis Seminar I, 
45 hours lecture, 3 credits
 (taken in the third semester)

    • PIMA 7240G: Thesis Seminar II, 
45 hours lecture, 45 hours independent work, 6 credits (taken in the fourth semester)

    • PIMA 7321G, 7322G:  Performance Art I & II,
 30 hours rehearsal plus independent work, 2 credits.

    • PIMA 7741G: Dynamic and Interactive Media In Performance I, 30 Hours lecture, 30 Hours laboratory, 3 Credits (taken in the first semester).

    • PIMA 7742G: Dynamic and Interactive Media in Performance II, 30 Hours lecture, 30 Hours laboratory, 3 Credits (taken in the second semester).

    • Three credits of independent projects in areas such as: video design, video systems design, sound design, sound system design, software design, interface design, sensor building, sound editing, and music for video. Pursued in cooperation with student or professional projects, on or off campus:

      • PIMA 7110G – Independent Projects – 1 credit

      • PIMA 7120G – Independent Projects – 2 credits

      • PIMA 7130G – Independent Projects – 3 credits

        • In the event that a student’s work does not lend itself to independent projects, the student may, with permission of the Program Director, take an additional 3-credit elective course (see below). 

  • Nine credits of additional electives chosen from any of the following:

    • PIMA 7040G: Independent Investigations in Interactive Media
, 45 hours lecture, Independent studies, mentored by faculty, 3 credits.

    • Courses currently offered by participating departments and colleges (i.e. Art, Computer and Information Science, Film, Music, Television and Radio, Theater, Hunter College’s IMA program, etc.) and designated as Interactive Arts electives. A list of available courses is published each semester.

    • Graduate-level special topics courses which are appropriate as electives.

    • When offered, PIMA 7990G: Special Topics in Performance and Interactive Media, such as Professionalization for the Performing Arts: The Business of Self-Producing. 30 hours lecture, 15 hours independent work, 3 credits.

    • No more than three credits of additional independent projects (PIMA 7110G – PIMA 7130G, see above).
